Iran's Protests Intensify: Khamenei Responds to Trump Amid Rising Tensions
As protests erupt across Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has responded firmly to recent comments made by US President Donald Trump. Following Trump's declaration that the United States would intervene if the Iranian regime violently suppresses peaceful protesters, Khamenei dismissed the protesters as "rioters" needing to be restrained. The situation has escalated following the deaths of ten individuals amid widespread demonstrations, making this unrest among the largest since the protests ignited over the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022.
Khamenei addressed the public through state-run television, clarifying that while protests driven by economic distress warrant dialogue, riots will not be tolerated. "We talk to protesters. The officials must talk to them," Khamenei stated. However, he firmly declared, "there is no benefit to talking to rioters. Rioters must be put in their place."
The Iranian leader attributed the turmoil to external influences, including the US and Israel, suggesting that they are fomenting unrest to undermine the Islamic Republic. He claimed that the collapsing value of the rial is a result of these external forces manipulating citizens and inciting dissent among the tradesmen and shopkeepers.
The protests are now reported to involve more than 100 locations across 22 of Iran's 31 provinces, indicating a widespread discontent fueled by economic hardships. Reports emerging from state media detail how the situation has turned deadly, with escalating violence resulting in at least six confirmed fatalities. Among the deceased was a man who reportedly died when a grenade he was carrying detonated in the city of Qom, and a member of the Basij, the paramilitary arm of the Revolutionary Guard, was killed in Harsin.
Historically, Iran has seen significant unrest linked to economic grievances, with major protests occurring in 2019 over gasoline prices leading to approximately 300 deaths, while the Amini protests in 2022 resulted in over 500 fatalities and thousands of detentions. The current events, ignited by the economic crisis, indicate deep-seated frustrations within Iranian society as citizens call for change amidst a context of repression and political tension.
As the situation continues to unfold, both protesters and the Iranian regime are bracing for further confrontations, particularly amid rising international scrutiny and potential ramifications from the Trump administration's statements.
