Iran's Stark Warnings Amid Rising US Tensions: A Global Shipping Chokepoint at Risk
Iran has issued dire warnings regarding its potential responses to any US military strikes targeting its infrastructure. The Iranian military, represented by Colonel Ebrahim Zolfaqari from the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, has declared that such attacks would trigger widespread devastation across the region, affecting critical infrastructure that has, until now, remained untouched due to Iran's previous restraint.
Zolfaqari called the Strait of Hormuz an 'inviolable red line,' stressing that any US interference would not be tolerated. He asserted that retaliation against US actions would be disproportionate, declaring that Iran’s military response would be broader, more severe, and more devastating than ever before.
This warning comes amid escalating tensions as both Iran and the US have engaged in sustained military strikes over recent days. Reports indicate that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has launched missile strikes against US bases in Jordan and has carried out drone attacks targeting US military facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain. The IRGC justified the strikes as a reprisal for a claimed US attack near a children's cancer hospital in Iran, which Iranian officials described as a 'cowardly war crime' against innocent lives.
In response, the US military has intensified its attacks, reportedly hitting Iranian command centers, air defense systems, and missile capabilities, including strikes near Tehran and other key locations. The situation has escalated to include targeting vessels accused of attempting to breach the American naval blockade on Iran.
A new focal point in this escalating conflict is the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a crucial maritime chokepoint. Reports suggest that Iran has instructed the Houthis in Yemen—part of Iran's Axis of Resistance network—to prepare to close this strait if US strikes continue. The Houthi's readiness to leverage missiles and drones near the Bab el-Mandeb adds another layer of complexity, posing potential threats to global shipping routes.
Iran's Parliament Speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, emphasized that Iran's national security hinges on maintaining control over the Strait of Hormuz, signaling that any agreement with the US must serve Iran's interests. He indicated that negotiations and military preparedness must coexist, framing war as a last resort while insisting on Iran's right to defend its territory.
Brigadier General Mohammad Akraminia stated that Iran's ability to control maritime routes does not solely rely on its southern coastline. He insisted that continued US military operations could lead to an expansion of the conflict, although he maintained that Iran seeks cooperation with its neighbors instead of confrontation.
The Iranian embassy in Zimbabwe reinforced this position, stating firmly that 'The Strait of Hormuz has a master,' illustrating Tehran's determination to assert its influence over the strategic waterways that are vital to global trade.
As the situation continues to evolve, both sides are navigating a precarious balance of power, with global trade and regional stability hanging in the balance amid threats and military posturing.
