Irene Montero Calls for Victims' Empowerment Amidst Resignation of Íñigo Errejón

Irene Montero, the former Minister of Equality and current Member of the European Parliament for Podemos, has reacted strongly to the resignation of Íñigo Errejón, a fellow party member, amidst allegations of inappropriate behavior toward women. In a post shared on the social media platform X, Montero emphasized that in any case of sexual violence, the priority must always be the victims. She stated that victims and their supporters should feel protected and safe, rather than isolated or fearful.

Montero highlighted the importance of ending impunity as a crucial step towards justice and reparation for victims. She expressed her gratitude to journalist Cristina Fallarás for creating a safe space for women to share their experiences and support one another, stating, 'Thank you Cristina Fallarás for being a safe space for all of us.'

In her statement, Montero pointed out that breaking the silence on such issues is a formidable challenge. She noted that historically, those in power, particularly men, have often been shielded from accountability, which perpetuates a culture of silence and injustice. 'Changing this dynamic of the culture of rape is the task that feminism sets before all of us,' she asserted, stressing the need for political parties and media organizations to commit to this cause.

On the other hand, Íñigo Errejón announced his departure from politics via a message on X, stating, 'I announce this as I have already informed my responsible colleagues, my resignation as spokesperson for the Plurinational Parliamentary Group of Sumar. I am leaving my seat in Congress and all my political responsibilities.' He disclosed that he has been undertaking a personal process, including psychological support, for some time.

The allegations against Errejón, which gained traction this week following a publication on Instagram by Fallarás, prompted the leadership of Sumar to initiate an investigation into the claims of sexual harassment. The party released a statement reaffirming its commitment to fostering a feminist society and politics, noting that this requires accountability in all areas.

As the situation develops, it underscores a critical moment for not just political figures but for broader society, highlighting the necessity for cultural change and the empowerment of victims in the fight against sexual violence and harassment.
