Israeli Airstrikes Continue Amid Civilian Casualties in Gaza

On Saturday, the Israeli Army carried out a bombing of a school in Gaza City, claiming to have detected the presence of militants preparing attacks against Israeli troops and territory. The airstrike resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to several more, according to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa.

This incident follows a distressingly familiar pattern, as Israel often targets locations it alleges are associated with militants, while asserting measures are taken to minimize civilian casualties. Yet, with 14 months of conflict having devastated much of Gaza, many residents find themselves seeking shelter in schools—those very places that have increasingly become targets of Israeli attacks.

Just days prior, an Israeli strike on a post office building in central Gaza left at least 33 people dead and over 80 injured, with the majority being women and children. The military stated that the bomb aimed at a senior official of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, but the repercussions of the attack led to secondary explosions that caused additional destruction, impacting a nearby residential building.

The governing body of Gaza, controlled by Hamas, reported that most of the victims of the post office airstrike were from the same family and condemned Israel for being aware of the civilian population in the area prior to the attack. As tensions escalate and more civilians become victims of the hostilities, questions surrounding the ethicality and legality of such military operations continue to be debated on the international stage.
