Israeli Army Intercepts New Gaza Flotilla Amid Growing International Tensions

On Wednesday, the Israeli army intercepted a new flotilla bound for Gaza just days after the detention of high-profile activists on another convoy ignited protests across Europe. The Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed that at least 145 activists were brought to shore for processing and are expected to face deportation shortly. Among those detained were doctors, politicians, and three lawmakers from Turkey. On Wednesday morning, three boats—Gaza Sunbirds, Alaa AlNajjar, and Anas AlSharif—were reportedly attacked and illegally intercepted by Israeli troops approximately 220 kilometers off the Gaza coast, according to organizers who shared updates on social media. Footage from the interceptions showed fast-moving Israeli military vessels approaching the flotilla boats before boarding them. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during these operations. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition is a coalition of pro-Palestinian groups dedicated to ending Israel's blockade on Gaza. The interception of this flotilla follows the earlier interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which resulted in widespread protests and a general strike in Italy. In total, at least 450 activists have been detained during these recent incursions, including prominent climate activist Greta Thunberg, who joined the aid flotilla. Israeli authorities offered all detained activists the option of voluntary deportation, but those who refused faced a more formal legal deportation process. Several activists have alleged mistreatment by Israeli authorities during their detention, a claim that Israeli officials have categorically denied, branding it a "brazen lie."
