Israeli Leaders' Call for Sovereignty Amid Escalating Conflict in Gaza
In a recent address, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich made controversial statements advocating for the permanent annexation of Gaza and the West Bank, celebrating the anticipated return of Donald Trump to the White House as a pivotal moment for Israeli sovereignty. At a meeting of his ultranationalist Religious Zionism party, Smotrich asserted, "We were a step away from applying sovereignty over the settlements in Judea and Samaria [the West Bank], and now the time has come to do it." He declared that there is a sweeping consensus within the Israeli government and opposition against the establishment of a Palestinian state, describing members of Hamas and other pro-Iranian militias as "Nazis" and opposed to an end to the ongoing war in Gaza.
Following years of strained relations with the U.S. administration under President Biden, Smotrich viewed Trump's electoral victory as a critical opportunity. He proclaimed, "2025 is the year of sovereignty in Judea and Samaria," and stated he had directed the settlements administration division within the Defense Ministry to begin developing infrastructure for annexation.
Meanwhile, since the conflict intensified, Israel has seen record levels of land appropriation in the occupied West Bank, with over 2300 hectares declared as state land this year. Critics, including the Israeli NGO Peace Now, condemned Smotrich's rhetoric as serving a radical minority, warning that such actions could lead to an endless cycle of violence, contrary to the wishes of the majority of Israelis who seek peace.
The Palestinian National Authority responded sharply to Smotrich's comments, stating they are a result of international failures in addressing Palestinian rights. They called for international sanctions against Israeli settlers and authorities, holding that the lack of commitment from the international community has empowered radicals in power.
In the ongoing crisis in Gaza, the violence has continued to escalate with recent Israeli airstrikes resulting in substantial Palestinian casualties. Over the past week, at least 15 Palestinians have died from aerial bombings, with daily reports of casualties, including strikes in densely populated areas where displaced individuals were attempting to connect to the internet.
