Israel's Military Actions in Lebanon Continue Amid Ceasefire Tensions
The Netanyahu government justifies ongoing military operations in southern Lebanon, citing alleged violations by Hezbollah of the current ceasefire agreement. The Israeli army reported that militants approached troops positioned in the southern region of Lebanon from the northern area of the strategic yellow line, which is under Israeli military control. They regarded this approach as an immediate threat, leading to airstrikes by the Israeli Air Force. Specific details about the timing of these attacks since the ceasefire initiated on the 16th were not disclosed by the army.
This announcement follows a statement made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who said that Washington had prohibited Israel from conducting bombings in Lebanon as part of the ceasefire agreement. Despite these limitations, the Israeli military claimed that its defensive actions are justified and not constrained by the current ceasefire.
In its operations, the Israeli army targeted not only militant positions but also infrastructure in the area. The situation became more complex with European leaders previously welcoming the ceasefire in Lebanon. However, on the same day of the army's attacks, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that a French soldier part of the UN force deployed in Lebanon had died, while three others were injured following an attack attributed to Hezbollah.
Evidence suggests that Trump pressured Israel into accepting the ceasefire terms, yet the Washington-mediated agreement favors Israel, allowing it to respond to threats in legitimate defense without requiring a withdrawal of its forces from Lebanese territory. Notably, Israeli troops have fortified their presence in southern Lebanon since a renewed offensive last March.
As a result, the Israeli military has ordered the evacuation of entire populations from a significant area of Lebanon, affecting around 600,000 residents. There have been reports of many returning to their homes shortly after the ceasefire took effect, despite warnings from the Israeli army against doing so. Unfortunately, most found their residences either damaged or destroyed, due to bombings or controlled demolitions conducted by Israeli forces to establish a security buffer zone.
On the first day of the ceasefire, tragedy struck again, as an Israeli drone strike killed one individual, underlining the tenuous nature of the truce amidst ongoing military tension. The complex realities on the ground suggest that while a ceasefire has been declared, significant hostilities and violations threaten to undermine peace efforts in the region.
