Italian Defense Minister Condemns Israeli Attack on UN Peacekeeping Forces in Lebanon
In a strong statement during a press conference on Thursday evening, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto condemned the Israeli military's recent attack on bases of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which includes an Italian contingent. Crosetto described the assault as 'totally unacceptable,' asserting that there is no justification for Israel's actions, especially in light of the warning issued to UNIFIL forces prior to the attack.
The UNIFIL mission has been active since 1978, tasked with ensuring respect for the border between Israel and Lebanon and fostering peaceful relations between the two nations. The Italian contingent is one of the largest participating forces in the mission, which aims to maintain stability in the region.
During the press conference, Crosetto revealed that the Israeli military had launched an attack on the UNIFIL bases on Thursday after earlier requesting that the troops evacuate to avoid being caught in active combat zones. However, the UNIFIL soldiers opted to remain in place, emphasizing that their role is to uphold peace. 'The purpose of the mission is precisely to maintain a peaceful situation as much as possible at the border, and both sides have an obligation to respect safety and protection,' Crosetto stated.
In response to the attack, the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations reiterated the recommendation for the troops to reposition themselves. Crosetto articulated a firm stance, insisting that both the United Nations and Italy are present in the region in accordance with a UN resolution. He remarked, 'The only way to question the presence of the mission is by submitting the matter to the United Nations, and certainly not by giving orders to free nations that are there to defend international law.'
The mission spokesperson, Andrea Tenenti, reported that two of the three affected bases are under Italian military management, while the third serves as the mission's headquarters. Fortunately, it was noted that none of the injuries involved personnel from the Italian contingent, which is renowned for being the second-largest contingent engaged in UNIFIL duties.
Crosetto urged that the attack not only disregards the mission's mandate but also undermines international law and cooperation among nations. He emphasized the imperative of dialogue and understanding in conflict resolution, rather than hostilities, and reiterated the importance of safeguarding the independence and operational integrity of peacekeeping missions worldwide.
