Italian Deputy Faces Trial for Firearm Incident at New Year's Celebration
Deputy Emanuele Pozzolo is set to face trial for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition in a public setting, with the proceedings slated to commence at the end of February. The case stems from an incident that occurred during a New Year's Eve party in Rosazza, located in the province of Biella. During the celebration, a man named Luca Campana was injured in the leg due to a shot fired from Pozzolo's firearm. Notably, Campana is the son-in-law of Andrea Delmastro, the head of security for the Undersecretary of Justice, who was also present at the party.
Pozzolo, a member of the Brothers of Italy party, has been suspended from his position following this incident. Importantly, he will not face trial for the injury charges because Campana has since retracted his earlier complaint against Pozzolo concerning the shooting. Additionally, charges related to dangerous ignition, explosions, and negligent storage of firearms have been dropped as they have lapsed due to an oblatory procedure, allowing for the dismissal of charges in exchange for a financial payment to the state.
As Pozzolo prepares for trial, questions are being raised about the implications of this incident both for him personally and for the political landscape in Italy, particularly regarding the accountability of public figures in matters related to public safety and firearms control.
