Italian Government Expels Russian Embassy Personnel Amid Espionage Scandal

On Thursday, Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced a significant move in response to growing concerns over espionage activities within its borders. The Italian government has decided to expel two military personnel associated with the Russian embassy in Rome, identified as Ivan Petrovich Gorbachev and Mikhail Vasilyevich Astakhov. Both are accused of involvement in espionage activities that have raised alarms in Italy's national security. Tajani specified that the two military personnel are required to leave Rome within three days. This action comes in the wake of a broader investigation into Russian espionage efforts in Italy. Just a day prior, Italian authorities arrested two former agents of the Internal Information and Security Agency (AISI), the country's intelligence service. These agents, Gavino Raoul Piras and Vincenzo Di Pasquale, are suspected of passing classified information in exchange for money. Reports indicate that Astakhov, benefiting from diplomatic immunity accorded to embassy staff, is directly implicated in the exchange of secrets. Diplomatic immunity protects foreign diplomats from being detained or prosecuted by the authorities of the host country, meaning the only recourse Italy had was to expel Astakhov from its territory. The situation surrounding Gorbachev, however, remains murky, as the specifics of the accusations against him had not previously been disclosed by the police or media. The investigation does not stop with the expulsion of Gorbachev and Astakhov. Authorities are also probing five additional individuals, including four active military personnel, under allegations that encompass a range of serious offenses. These allegations include the procurement of sensitive information that jeopardizes state security, political or military espionage, as well as the disclosure of state secrets and unauthorized communication of classified information. This developing story underscores the existing tensions between Italy and Russia, particularly in light of the increased scrutiny on espionage practices in Europe during a time of geopolitical uncertainty. As investigations continue, the Italian government’s actions signal a firm stance against espionage activities that threaten national security. Related Sources: • Source 1 • Source 2
