Italian Gymnast Lorenzo Bonicelli Suffers Serious Injuries at Universiade

Italian gymnast Lorenzo Bonicelli, 23, has suffered serious injuries during the Universiade, the premier international sports competition for university students, currently taking place in Germany from July 16 to July 27. Bonicelli sustained a neck injury after a fall during the rings event on Wednesday in Essen, a city located in the western part of the country. Following the accident, he underwent surgery on his cervical vertebrae and is now in a pharmacological coma. In light of the incident, the Italian men's artistic gymnastics team has decided to withdraw from the Universiade. The Italian Gymnastics Federation shared that this decision was made by the technical staff, taking into account the profound emotional impact on the team members after witnessing such a serious accident. Bonicelli is a proud member of the Ghislanzoni GAL club in Lecco and is currently studying Economics at the online university Mercatorum. He is noted for his talent, having previously won a bronze team medal at the Junior World Championships held in Gyor, Hungary, in 2019. At this time, the hospital in Essen has yet to provide any updates on Bonicelli's condition, leaving the gymnastics community and his supporters in deep concern for his recovery.
