Italian Leaders Condemn Russian Drone Strike in Romania as Escalation of Aggression
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, and Defence Minister Guido Crosetto voiced strong condemnation on Friday following reports of a Russian drone striking an apartment building in Romania. The incident, which occurred near the border with Ukraine, resulted in injuries to two individuals, sparking outrage from Italian officials. Meloni expressed deep concern over the implications of this attack, labeling it an 'extremely grave act.'
'Last night, a Russian drone struck a civilian building in Romania, injuring two citizens on the territory of an allied state and a member of the European Union,' Meloni stated. She emphasized that this attack illustrates the indiscriminate nature of Russia's aggression, which does not spare innocent civilians and threatens European security.
In her heartfelt message, she extended her sympathy and solidarity to those affected by the attack, as well as to the Romanian government and its people.
Echoing Meloni's sentiments, Deputy Premier Antonio Tajani took to the social media platform X to call on the Russian Federation to engage in serious negotiations for a just and lasting peace. He emphasized Italy's solidarity with Romania during this troubling time.
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto also condemned the hit on a civilian structure in the city of Galați, characterizing the event as a 'dangerous and irresponsible escalation that cannot be tolerated.'
Crosetto reaffirmed NATO’s unwavering unity, stating, 'In the face of these threats, NATO's cohesion remains unshakable. The security of one member of the Alliance and the European Union is the security of all of us, united in the defense of peace, stability, and the Euro-Atlantic territory.'
This incident has raised considerable alarm in Europe, highlighting the potential for the conflict in Ukraine to spill over and affect neighboring countries, and underlining the importance of international solidarity and cooperation against acts of aggression.
