Italian Lyricist Mogol's Helicopter Ride Sparks Controversy
A controversy has ignited in Italy after the renowned lyricist Mogol was transported by a fire brigade helicopter from the Sanremo Song Festival, where he received a career achievement award on Thursday night, to another award ceremony in Rome on Friday. This unusual use of a firefighting helicopter has drawn criticism, with the USB union stating, "This is extremely serious; the craft was used for reasons outside its institutional remit." Furthermore, opposition politicians have expressed their disapproval regarding the incident.
Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi defended the decision, labeling the criticism as "instrumental polemics." He argued that it was only fitting to provide a complimentary flight for Mogol, a national treasure who is turning 90 this August. Mogol is widely recognized for his contributions to Italian music, particularly for his collaborations with the late Lucio Battisti.
Reflecting on the experience, Mogol himself stated that he enjoyed the helicopter ride and the awards ceremony that followed at Teatro Argentina in Rome. During the event, he was honored with an honorary membership in Italy's fire service after composing their new anthem. Despite the backlash, it seems that Mogol's accolades and the recognition of his artistic contributions remain a focal point of celebration.
