Italian MP Chained to Bench in Protest Over Rai Oversight Commission Gridlock

Roberto Giachetti, an MP for the opposition centrist Italia Viva (IV) party, made headlines on Friday as he staged a dramatic protest against the 20-month deadlock of the parliamentary commission overseeing the state broadcaster, Rai. In a bold move, Giachetti chained himself to his bench in the Lower House to draw attention to the ongoing political stalemate. Expressing gratitude towards Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Giachetti reported that four centrerright members of the Rai oversight board pledged to ensure a quorum for the next meeting. "I thank the Prime Minister who called me today, to whom I explained my reasons, which I believe she understood," Giachetti stated. He added that he thought Meloni facilitated the majority's position, which was crucial for moving forward. Members from Meloni's right-wing Brothers of Italy party, the center-right Forza Italia, the League, and the Noi Moderati also acknowledged Giachetti’s concerns, emphasizing their disagreement but willingness to ensure a quorum for the commission, which has been paralyzed amid ongoing political disagreements. In his commentary, Giachetti voiced his appreciation for the Speaker of the Chamber and all political forces who showed solidarity with him. Furthermore, he specifically thanked IV leader and former premier Matteo Renzi for his concern regarding Giachetti's health. After 12 days of a hunger strike linked to the protest, he announced the suspension of this initiative, aware that some objectives are still unmet. Giachetti indicated that the ruling majority's recent commitment signifies a positive step towards unblocking the oversight deadlock. Initially, his nonviolent protest initiative aimed at addressing three main issues: restoring effective oversight, appointing a president for Rai, and renewing discussions regarding Rai governance in the Senate’s eighth committee. Giachetti noted that the Ministry of Economy and Finance showed willingness to address these issues, suggesting potential progress ahead, especially with the upcoming engagement of Economy Minister Gianfranco Giorgetti. The stalemate within the commission has hindered the appointment of a new RAI president since Marinella Soldi vacated the position in 2024. The role has been filled provisionally, which has not quelled concerns about the functioning of the major state broadcaster or its accountability. Highlighting the severity of the situation, Giachetti stated, "To protest against the sequestration of the Rai Oversight Commission by the ruling majority, I am sequestrating myself in the house of democracy... this must not continue." He transitioned from a hunger strike to a 'dry hunger strike' on the 12th day, underscoring the urgency of the issue. In a poignant statement, he remarked, "Instead of worrying about my health, it would be helpful if we all concerned ourselves with the health of democracy." Giachetti firmly stated his intention to remain chained to his seat until a public commitment is made to ensure a quorum at the next Rai Oversight Commission meeting. In an ironic twist, he shared that he purchased the handcuffs used for the protest from a sex shop, a detail that garnered significant media attention. Additionally, he humorously mentioned wearing a nappy to avoid leaving his seat, showcasing the lengths to which he would go for his cause. Medical personnel stood by to assist Giachetti if necessary, while Speaker Lorenzo Fontana visited him, expressing concern for both his well-being and the need for a resolution to the Rai oversight committee deadlock. This situation has left many questioning the efficacy and future of government oversight in Italy as the struggle for democratic integrity continues. Related Sources: • Source 1 • Source 2
