Italian Politician Files Complaint Against Donald Trump Jr. Over Alleged Duck Hunting Violation

An environmental issue has stirred controversy as a politician from Italy's Veneto region accuses Donald Trump Jr. of illegally hunting a protected species of duck in the Venice lagoon. Andrea Zanoni, a regional councillor and environmentalist, asserted that he has reported Trump Jr. to authorities for allegedly killing a ruddy shelduck, a rare bird protected by European Union laws and Italian wildlife regulations.

The allegations stem from a video published by Field Ethos, which markets itself as a premier lifestyle publication aimed at 'the unapologetic man.' In the video, Trump Jr. and a group of hunters can be seen taking aim at various ducks, with the ruddy shelduck prominently featured in the foreground. Zanoni took to social media to express his concern, stating: "Killing the protected bird was a crime."

Despite the serious nature of the accusations, neither Zanoni nor Trump Jr. provided immediate responses to requests for commentary from AFP. The distressing video, later shared by the Corriere della Sera daily newspaper, showcases Trump Jr. shooting ducks from a pit blind while sharing remarks on the hunting experience.

"Great morning, lots of wigeon teal. This is actually a rather uncommon duck for the area. Not even sure what it is in English," Trump Jr. states in the video, while pointing at a dead orange-brown duck surrounded by other deceased waterfowl.

Zanoni has urged regional authorities to take action against any violations of the law, questioning whether the sanctions might include suspending or revoking the hunting licenses of those involved in the incident. He referenced the location of the video being filmed in the Pierimpie valley, south of Venice, an area recognized for its ecological significance and protected under European regulations known as the Middle Lower Lagoon of Venice.

In response to the complaint, the regional council has indicated that it will address Zanoni’s inquiries in a timely manner suitable to the situation. The ruddy shelduck, noted for its winter migration from Central Asia to southeastern Europe for breeding, underscores the critical need for vigilant wildlife protection regulations.

The unfolding situation has not only drawn attention due to the involvement of a prominent figure like Trump Jr. but also highlights the ongoing tension surrounding hunting practices, wildlife conservation, and the complexities of enforcing environmental laws. As the investigation progresses, it remains to be seen what actions will be taken and how they will be perceived by the public and the international community.
