Italian President Appeals to Global Sumud Flotilla: A Call for Compassion and Safety

In a poignant appeal, the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, has reached out to the participants of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a significant humanitarian initiative aimed at delivering essential supplies to the besieged Gaza Strip. He expressed deep concern for the safety of everyone aboard the vessels, urging them to consider accepting a previously rejected proposal from the Italian government to deliver humanitarian aid through the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. However, the response from Maria Elena Delia, the Italian spokesperson for the Flotilla, rejected Mattarella's overture. Delia explained that accepting the proposal would mean altering their course, a move she views as a concession that the government operates illegally, thereby undermining their mission. She stated, "This proposal comes to avoid our boats navigating in international waters at the risk of being attacked. The issue of aid is important, and the Flotilla is ready to consider mediations, but not by changing course." Currently, the flotilla remains stationed south of the island of Crete in Greece, having been delayed after experiencing attacks in late September. Adding to the challenges, the fleet's prominent vessel, the Family, suffered a mechanical failure, necessitating those aboard to transfer to other boats. Despite these setbacks, the participants' resolve to reach Gaza remains unwavering.
