Italy and India Forge Historic Strategic Partnership Amidst Promising Trade Goals
On Wednesday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the elevation of bilateral relations with India to the status of a special strategic partnership, following significant discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Rome's Villa Doria Pamphilj.
During a joint press conference, Meloni emphasized the importance of this moment, stating, "Now Italy and India are closer than ever," highlighting that this day marks a historic milestone for both nations. Modi's visit is particularly noteworthy as it is his first since he took office in 2014, with the last visit from an Indian prime minister dating back to 2000.
Meloni expressed that the agreements signed on this occasion are the result of a long-term effort to rejuvenate and deepen the Italy-India relationship, aiming to increase the current bilateral trade from around €14 billion a year to €20 billion by 2029.
"Our goal is to enhance the complementarity between our two cultures," said Meloni, pointing to discussions that covered diverse sectors including advanced manufacturing, infrastructure, and energy. The two leaders dined together the previous evening, setting a collaborative tone for their negotiations.
Defense is another critical area where both countries are working closely together, but the agenda extends to various fields such as critical minerals, agrifood, maritime transport, tourism, and culture. Meloni remarked on the vast potential for collaboration between the two ancient civilizations, stating, "The important agreements we are signing today go precisely in this direction—they aim to strengthen our cooperation across a very broad spectrum of fields."
In an exciting announcement, Meloni declared that 2027 will be designated as the Italy-India Year of Culture and Tourism, further solidifying the commitment to foster deeper connections between the two nations.
As Italy and India embark on this pivotal journey together, both leaders are hopeful that their collaboration will not only enhance trade but will also create enduring ties that celebrate the rich cultural heritages of their countries.
