Italy Faces Severe Heatwave: 16 Cities Under Red Alert

On Tuesday, June 23, the Italian Ministry of Health issued a forecast indicating that 15 major cities will be under red alerts due to impending heatwaves. The cities affected include Ancona, Bologna, Bolzano, Brescia, Florence, Frosinone, Milan, Perugia, Pescara, Rieti, Rome, Turin, Verona, Venice, and Viterbo. By Wednesday, June 24, the number of cities under red alert is expected to increase to 16 with the addition of Latina. The Ministry is closely monitoring heat health risks in a total of 27 cities across Italy. A red alert signifies the highest risk level, highlighting weather conditions that can adversely affect health, even for healthy individuals, not just the vulnerable populations like the elderly, very young children, and those with chronic illnesses. In major cities like Rome, Turin, Perugia, and Milan, maximum temperatures are predicted to soar to 35 degrees Celsius, while Florence, Verona, and Bologna are expected to reach 36 degrees Celsius. What sets this heatwave apart from previous occurrences, despite not being the highest temperature recorded, is its duration. Forecasters warn that the atmospheric conditions leading to this heatwave may persist until the early days of July, potentially making this one of the longest heat periods seen in recent years. The ongoing situation calls for increased awareness and preparedness as Italy battles this significant weather challenge. Related Sources: • Source 1 • Source 2
