Jim Carrey's César Awards Appearance Sparks Lookalike Controversy
The organizer of the prestigious César awards recently addressed speculation surrounding Jim Carrey's appearance at the event. Reports surfaced claiming that a lookalike had stood in for Carrey during the ceremony. However, Gregory Caulier, the general delegate of the Césars, dismissed these rumors, labeling them a "nonissue." In a statement to Variety, Caulier expressed that Carrey had invested significant time and effort into the event, which had been in preparation since last summer.
"From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy's invitation," Caulier wrote. He detailed how Carrey had spent months working on his speech in French and even sought guidance on the precise pronunciation of specific words. Carrey brought a large entourage with him to the awards—a total of 16 close family members and friends, including his partner, daughter, grandson, and publicist. Notable among his guests was filmmaker Michel Gondry, a long-time collaborator.
Caulier reflected positively on Carrey’s character, stating, "For me, it’s a nonissue. I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance."
During the ceremony on February 26, Carrey delivered an emotional speech in French, paying homage to the legends of French cinema. He also shared a personal connection to France, noting that his ancestor, Marc-François Carré, had been born in St. Malo over 300 years prior before emigrating to Canada.
Despite the heartfelt nature of Carrey's address, many observers noted what they believed to be significant alterations in Carrey's appearance, particularly around his eyes, cheeks, and nose. This led to speculation that the individual on stage might have been an impersonator. Drag artist Alexis Stone took to Instagram, sharing photos of various prosthetics that suggested he had been the one to impersonate Carrey rather than the beloved actor himself.
Actor Megan Fox chimed in via Instagram, voicing her own stress over the situation. "I can't handle any more stress right now. I need to know if this is real," she posted, echoing the confusion felt by many fans.
Carrey, once among Hollywood's most cherished comedy actors, received acclaim for more serious roles in films such as *Man on the Moon* and *Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind*. Recently, he hinted at a potential retirement, stating in 2022, "I really like my quiet life, and I really like putting paint on canvas, and I really love my spiritual life. I feel like, and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say, I have enough. I've done enough. I am enough."
However, he also mentioned that he would consider returning to acting if a compelling role presented itself. "If angels bring some sort of script that's written in gold ink, that says to me it's going to be really important for people to see, I would do it," he remarked.
Two years later, Carrey agreed to reprise his role in *Sonic the Hedgehog 3*, humorously admitting to a reporter, "I need the money, frankly." Subsequently, the actor disclosed that a copy of the script had indeed been delivered to him, written in 24-carat ink.
As of December 2024, Carrey confirmed that his plans did not involve a complete retirement; instead, he aims to engage in what he termed "power resting."
