Joe Biden's Farewell Address: Reflecting on Achievements and Concerns

On Wednesday evening in Italy, Joe Biden delivered what can be termed his farewell speech, marking his final address as the President of the United States ahead of the conclusion of his term on January 20. This address symbolically signifies not just the end of Biden's presidency but the culmination of more than fifty years of his political career.

Speaking for approximately 20 minutes from the Oval Office at the White House, Biden aimed to articulate his political legacy on his own terms. He commenced his speech by defining the ceasefire agreement achieved in the Gaza Strip between Hamas and Israel, which was also mediated by the United States, as a notable success of his administration. 'The plan was developed and negotiated by my team, but it will be implemented during the next administration,' he stated, alluding to the looming inauguration of his successor and predecessor, Donald Trump.

Biden went on to highlight other accomplishments from his past four years in office, celebrating the creation of millions of new jobs and the passage of the most significant climate and clean energy legislation in history.

However, he also voiced caution regarding certain pressing issues that concern him deeply. Specifically, he pointed to the increasing concentration of power among a small number of exceptionally wealthy individuals. 'An oligarchy is taking shape in the United States that threatens democracy, rights, and freedoms,' he warned. He expressed alarm over the perils of misinformation, which is often propagated through social media and facilitates the misuse of power.

While he refrained from naming Donald Trump directly, this segment of his speech was widely interpreted as a critique directed towards him, as well as Elon Musk, one of the wealthiest individuals and a known supporter of Trump's administration.

In a reflective tone, Biden recounted his personal journey, noting that it exemplifies the American dream. He emphasized, 'Only in America is anything possible,' highlighting how a stuttering child from humble beginnings in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Claymont, Delaware, could ascend to the Oval Office as President of the United States.

In closing, Biden expressed gratitude to all who served in his administration, particularly recognizing Kamala Harris as a historic vice president. His farewell address was broadcast across various television networks. The last time Biden delivered a notable speech of this nature was to announce his withdrawal from the presidential race last July.
