Juan Carlos I Receives Special Jury Award for Political Book, Reflects on Spain's Transition to Democracy
On Saturday, Juan Carlos I, the emeritus king of Spain, was honored with the Special Jury Award for Political Book at the National Assembly of France for his memoir, 'Reconciliation.' During his acceptance speech, he conveyed profound reflections regarding his legacy and the journey of Spain from dictatorship to democracy.
Sitting comfortably while reading in French, Juan Carlos I acknowledged the varying opinions about his time on the throne, stating, "I am aware that no one is a prophet in their own land and that there will always be different opinions and judgments." He expressed that his memoirs are intended to serve democracy and the advancement of the Spanish people.
The former monarch explained that the title of his memoirs was chosen purposefully, stating, "I believe it is the word that best sums up the main achievement of my public life—having initiated and fostered the reconciliation of Spain with itself after a long dictatorship and a civil war, leading it to transition in the most peaceful way possible and in a very short time to a full and complete democracy."
Juan Carlos I reflected on Spain's transformation during his reign, highlighting the progress made across various sectors. He recounted that when he inherited the throne in 1975, he was determined to lead Spain into a new era, breaking free from the shackles of General Franco's dictatorship. "I decided to use all the tools to return democracy to its rightful owner, to the Spaniards," he remarked.
While acknowledging a sense of sadness regarding the present, he declared, "The present does not overwhelm me, although it can sometimes sadden me." His focus, he emphasized, remains on democracy, human rights, and the advancement of Spanish society—goals he steadfastly pursued throughout his kingship.
The emeritus king noted that it is uncommon for a monarch to write their own memoirs, a practice his father had advised against. Yet, he chose to carve his own path, emphasizing that life is not merely a series of abstract moments. “This book has given me different opportunities to highlight the achievements during all these years and also the missteps. I have tried to explain why I think I have not been wrong; I hope I have succeeded,” he articulated.
Juan Carlos I highlighted the strong interest in his royal recollections, citing sales data that indicates a significant number of Spaniards are eager to learn about his reign. He expressed his commitment to recording important historic details, stating, "In these pages, I have also decided to record all that is pertinent to history. I have been faithful to all the feelings, to all the hopes that have marked my personal life."
In closing, Juan Carlos I emphasized the radical and positive transformation of Spain he witnessed during his reign, reiterating his gratitude to the authorities for recognizing his contributions.
