Junts and PSOE Collaborate on New Social Measures After Omnibus Decree Dismissal
The recent dismissal of the omnibus Royal Decree has paved the way for a new legislative effort driven by a coalition of Junts and the PSOE. Following the rejection from the post-convergents and the Popular Party (PP) last week, these parties have presented a new decree designed to incorporate many of the social measures that were previously suspended.
The party led by Carles Puigdemont has shifted from its previous stance, now expressing support for advancing a text that contains several new provisions while also omitting certain elements. Miriam Nogueras, the spokesperson for Junts in Congress, expressed satisfaction with the Council of Ministers’ approval of a new decree that aligns with their requests.
Among the key demands put forth by Junts are an increase in pensions, transportation aids, assistance for victims of DANA (severe weather events), and additional support for vulnerable families. A significant focus of their proposals is the assurance of protection for homeowners, marking an important initiative for their constituents.
While the resolution of the omnibus decree seems to be on track, the parties have opted not to address the matter of the upcoming General State Budgets just yet. Junts has reiterated its commitment to a folder-by-folder approach, as previously agreed upon with the PSOE in Switzerland, despite ongoing inquiries at their press conference regarding this issue.
Moreover, Junts has been vocal about their expectations for increased confidence from the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez. In clear terms, the Prime Minister has dismissed the idea of introducing a parliamentary figure that the Catalan party has indicated is within his jurisdiction to convene. Despite this setback, Junts remains determined and insists on having a formal debate on these matters.
"We want to engage in this debate," stated the spokesperson for Junts in Congress. "President Puigdemont argued that there should be a debate, and we should be able to vote. The debate is essential, and we must ensure it takes place."
As the political landscape evolves, the collaboration between Junts and PSOE may pose significant implications for social policy moving forward, especially regarding the welfare of vulnerable populations in Spain.
