Junts Leader Calls for Confidence Vote Against Spanish Prime Minister

Carles Puigdemont, the president of the Junts party, announced on Monday that his group in Congress will initiate a proposal for Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to submit to a confidence vote. This announcement came during a conference at the Press Club in Brussels, where Puigdemont assessed the first year of the coalition agreement between Junts and the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE).

According to Puigdemont, the time has come for a pivotal moment in political leadership, emphasizing the need to either take decisive action or risk waning patience among constituents. He stated, "The time has come for a turning point or to let it slide to not waste anyone's time or patience."

The concept of a confidence vote is outlined in Article 112 of the Spanish Constitution. The Prime Minister is required to present this request to the Lower House following discussions within the Council of Ministers. A confidence vote is passed if it garners a simple majority, meaning more votes in favor than against. This process resembles that of the initial vote for the investiture, with the opportunity for parties to deliberate and voice their opinions following the Prime Minister's opening remarks.

If the confidence vote is unsuccessful, the consequences would be significant, effectively serving as a resignation. This would trigger a new round of consultations by the king to engage with various parliamentary groups in Congress to identify potential candidates for a new investiture debate.

As political tensions grow, this development raises questions about the stability of Sánchez's government and the future of the coalition with Junts. The impending vote could set the stage for critical changes in Spain's political landscape.
