Junts Offers Temporary Support to Sánchez, Demands Clarity on Investiture Agreement
Junts is currently providing President Pedro Sánchez with some breathing room, contingent upon his adherence to the investiture agreement signed between the two parties in Brussels. This was clarified by Jordi Turull, the General Secretary of Junts, following a meeting with Sánchez and Miriam Nogueras. For now, the Catalans have decided not to pressure Sánchez for the immediate appointment of a new socialist interlocutor. Previously, this dialogue has been managed by Santos Cerdán, the former Secretary of Organization of the PSOE, who is now implicated by the UCO.
Turull emphasized that while Sánchez has affirmed his intention to comply with the agreement made with Carles Puigdemont's party, he has yet to provide details on how he plans to do so. As a result, Turull indicated that more meetings will be necessary to clarify these specifics.
However, the overall situation remains unchanged. Today's meeting, according to Turull, served to highlight the seriousness and uncertainty stemming from Cerdán's resignation. The relationship between Junts and the PSOE is still on a knife’s edge. Turull noted that while the president expressed his intent to continue dialogue, he did not clarify how these discussions would proceed or what measures would be taken to address both the scandal and the noncompliance with the Brussels Agreement. Turull pointed out that Junts is looking for guarantees and needs time to make prudent decisions, bearing in mind the best interests of Catalonia.
Moreover, it is significant to note that Turull himself was convicted by the Supreme Court in the procés case but later pardoned by the government, indicating the complex interplay of judicial decisions and political negotiations at play. As the dialogue progresses, both parties will need to navigate these challenges carefully, ensuring that any agreements made are respected and that the interests of Catalunya are prioritized.
