JxCat Rejects Motion of Censure Against Ripoll Mayor Sílvia Orriols
JxCat has officially dismissed the possibility of participating in a motion of censure against the mayor of Ripoll, Girona, Sílvia Orriols. This decision comes in light of current conditions that JxCat deems unfavorable, suggesting that engaging in such a political maneuver would only serve to amplify the victimhood of the far-right independentist party Aliança Catalana’s leader. In a statement released by JxCat, the party, which is associated with the former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont, articulated that swapping one minority government for another is not a feasible solution. They expressed concern that such a change might lead citizens to view it as a mere reshuffling of political figures rather than a genuine improvement in governance.
This stance effectively undermines the potential for a coalition that could successfully challenge Orriols, who is confronting a critical political landscape. Currently, JxCat, along with ERC (Republican Left of Catalonia) and PSC (Socialist Party of Catalonia) hold a total of eight councilors, while Orriols' party, Aliança Catalana, has six. Additionally, two councilors belong to CUP (Popular Unity Candidacy) and one to Somhi Ripoll, underscoring the delicate balance of power within the Ripoll local government.
Earlier this year, Mayor Orriols faced a significant challenge during a vote of confidence following the rejection of her proposed budget. She ultimately lost that vote, which triggered a one-month period wherein the opposition could attempt to unite and form a majority capable of forcing a change in governance. However, with JxCat stepping back from the motion of censure, the prospects for significant opposition appear bleak.
As the political climate in Ripoll continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these dynamics will impact the governance and future of the municipality amid escalating tensions and shifting alliances.
