JxCat's Turull Threatens to Propose Pension and Transport Subsidy Reforms Amidst Tensions with PSOE
On Thursday, Jordi Turull, the Secretary General of the Catalan political party JxCat, made a significant announcement regarding pension revaluation and public transport subsidies. He revealed that the party is prepared to put forward its own proposal if the government led by Pedro Sánchez does not swiftly approve a new decree to advance these measures. Speaking to TV3, Turull explained that JxCat had decided to oppose the omnibus decree presented by the Sánchez administration, which included the revaluation measures amidst other provisions.
Turull specifically criticized the emotional pressure he believes the socialist party is exerting on JxCat, insisting that his party should not serve as a support system for the PSOE. "He who warns is not a traitor," Turull emphasized, suggesting that JxCat is poised to act independently if necessary.
The tone of the statements underscored a sense of discontent with the PSOE's approach. According to Turull, the omnibus decree included several controversial points, particularly concerning evictions, which lack the support of independence advocates. He voiced concerns that the government's tactics prioritize political gain over substantive action.
"They have prioritized demagogy and political wear and tear," Turull asserted, criticizing the socialists for what he perceives as neglecting the pressing needs of the populace. He expressed clear frustration toward the failure of the Sánchez government to revaluate pensions and transport subsidies as the cost of living adjusts.
Turull issued a stern warning, stating that if the government does not take action in the coming hours, JxCat will move forward with its own proposal. "If the PSOE does not do it, we will do it ourselves," he declared, highlighting the urgency of the issue at hand.
Moreover, Turull criticized both the PSC and ERC for failing to advocate for what he termed a necessary increase in pensions that reflects regional cost-of-living variations. This lack of support exacerbates JxCat's position, as they strive to champion the interests of the Catalan people amid political discord.
As the clock ticks on the PSOE's potential actions, all eyes are on JxCat, whose next steps could redefine the landscape of public finance in Spain, reflecting the intertwined nature of political maneuvering and economic necessities in the context of ongoing struggles for independence and regional representation.
