Kamala Harris Discusses Ukraine Peace Talks and Personal Gun Ownership in Candid Interview

Democratic White House hopeful Kamala Harris made headlines during a recent interview aired on October 7, where she emphasized her stance on the Ukraine conflict and her personal firearm ownership. In the interview on CBS's 60 Minutes program, Harris asserted that if elected president, she would not engage in peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin without the involvement of Ukraine. "Not bilaterally without Ukraine; Ukraine must have a say in the future of Ukraine," she insisted, highlighting the importance of Ukrainian representation in negotiations regarding the ongoing war.

This stance aligns with the Biden administration's previous rejections of direct talks with Putin, showcasing a unified front in terms of international diplomacy on this pressing issue. Harris also voiced her criticisms of former President Donald Trump and his policies on Ukraine, labelling them as a "surrender" to Russia's aggressive actions initiated in February 2022. Trump, who has questioned the scale of military and financial aid provided by the U.S. to Ukraine, has claimed he could quickly secure peace with Putin if he were still in office. However, Harris challenged this notion, suggesting that any peace negotiations without a legitimate Ukrainian voice could lead to unacceptable concessions, particularly regarding territorial integrity.

Addressing concerns from Kyiv, where there is trepidation about potential decisions affecting regions captured by Russia, Harris firmly stated her commitment to ensuring Ukraine's interests would remain paramount in any discussions.

In a surprising turn during the same interview, Harris revealed her ownership of a Glock semiautomatic pistol, a detail she had previously kept private. This revelation followed her recent comments to television personality Oprah Winfrey about being a gun owner and her willingness to defend herself if her home were threatened. Addressing the subject directly, Harris confirmed her experience with firearms, stating, "I have a Glock and I've had it for quite some time." When asked if she had fired the weapon, she responded with humor, saying, "Of course I have. At a shooting range, yes of course I have."

Harris's comments not only shed light on her views regarding critical international issues but also provided insight into her personal background in law enforcement, reinforcing her position as a candidate who is both aware of the dangers of the current geopolitical climate and of the realities of gun ownership in America. Her dual focus on foreign policy and personal security reflects a multifaceted campaign approach as she seeks to solidify her presence in the race for the Democratic nomination.
