Khamenei Encourages Caution as Nuclear Talks with U.S. Continue
In recent remarks, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei indicated a cautious approach towards ongoing nuclear discussions with the United States. As the negotiations prepare for their second round this weekend, Khamenei expressed a balanced perspective, neither overly optimistic nor pessimistic about the potential outcomes.
On April 15, in his first public comments regarding the initial round of talks held in Muscat, Khamenei emphasized the importance of careful navigation as Iranian negotiators engage with U.S. counterparts. He acknowledged that while a decision was made to enter negotiations—which were executed effectively in the initial stages—taking measured steps is crucial as discussions progress.
"Our red lines and those of the other side are clearly defined," Khamenei stated during a gathering with senior members of Iran's three branches of government. He remarked on the unpredictable nature of negotiations, stating, "The negotiations may or may not lead to a result. We are neither very optimistic nor very pessimistic about these talks. Of course, we are very pessimistic about the other side but we are optimistic about our own capabilities."
Khamenei, who ultimately holds the final authority over state matters, urged Iranian officials to avoid tying national affairs to the outcome of these negotiations. This highlights a significant aspect of the Iranian leadership's stance—while engaging in discussions, they are also committed to maintaining sovereignty and independent decision-making.
The initial round of talks took place on April 12, with the next session scheduled for April 19. Originally, Italy was to host the second round; however, Iran later announced that Oman would continue to facilitate the discussions. The reasons for this venue change remain unclear, with none of the involved parties offering further details.
As the talks move forward, the complexities of diplomatic engagements between Tehran and Washington are set against a backdrop of historical tensions and mutual distrust. Khamenei's comments reflect both a cautious optimism from the Iranian perspective and a strategic awareness of the broader geopolitical landscape.
