King Juan Carlos I Holds Private Meeting with Family Amid Memoir Controversy
This afternoon, King Juan Carlos I had a private meeting with Princess Leonor and other royal family members at the Naval School of Marín. The Royal House confirmed the gathering to the program Más Vale Tarde on LaSexta. It was described as a family and private occasion. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia traveled to Galicia to partake in a private dinner marking the 40th anniversary of a flag oath related to the Navy promotion to which Juan Carlos belongs, as reported by ABC.
The meeting was brief and comes shortly after a Dutch magazine circulated images of King Juan Carlos kissing Bárbara Rey from the nineties. Additionally, French magazine Point de Vue announced that the emeritus king is set to release his memoirs with a French publisher. An excerpt from the memoir revealed his father's advice against writing such a book, to which the former monarch reflected, 'Why am I going to disobey him? I have the feeling that my own story is being stolen from me.'
The 86-year-old Juan Carlos details his mistakes in the memoir, which spans 500 pages and was written while in Abu Dhabi.
Prior to this meeting, the former monarch had not made a public appearance since the recent publication of the images and his upcoming memoir. Speculation arose regarding his absence from sailing competitions in Sanxenxo, where he usually spends time with his friend Pedro Campos. However, as the day progressed, around six o’clock in the evening, Juan Carlos was spotted leaving a vehicle to head to the Naval Military School of Marín, approximately a half-hour drive away, stirring interest about his visit to his granddaughter Leonor.
