Kremlin Adviser Kirill Dmitriev Set to Visit Washington Amid Efforts to Mend US-Russia Relations
Kirill Dmitriev, a senior adviser to the Kremlin and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, is expected to visit Washington this week for discussions with US officials regarding Ukraine and bilateral relations. This visit, as confirmed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, highlights ongoing efforts by both Washington and Moscow to repair relations that have deteriorated over the years, particularly since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Dmitriev's role in negotiations has grown in recent months, as he recently met with White House envoy Steve Witkoff during his visit to Moscow to discuss various issues with President Vladimir Putin and other officials. Reports suggest that the meeting between Dmitriev and Witkoff is anticipated to occur around April 2, with special visa arrangements needed for Dmitriev due to existing US sanctions against him.
The current diplomatic engagements come as both countries seek to mend a relationship that has been strained since 2012 during Barack Obama’s presidency, which worsened significantly following the invasion of Ukraine. In stark contrast to his predecessor, President Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump, has made significant efforts to engage with Moscow, including multiple phone calls with Putin and sending senior advisers for negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict.
However, tensions remain high. Recently, Trump expressed frustration with Putin’s comments regarding the establishment of a transitional government in Ukraine, a move that would sideline current President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump has also threatened new tariffs on Russian oil products if the country obstructs ceasefire efforts.
Dmitriev’s recent discussions included not only the war in Ukraine but also broader goals related to the revival of US-Russia relations and potential investment initiatives, particularly in the realm of joint rare earth metals projects. His involvement underscores the complexities of navigating a diplomatic pathway amid ongoing hostilities and economic sanctions that affect both nations.
