Kremlin Condemns Threats Against Russian Negotiator's Family Ahead of Tense Talks with Ukraine

The Kremlin strongly condemned threats made against the family of Vladimir Medinski, the head of the Russian delegation in the ongoing negotiations with Ukraine, as preparations intensify for the next round of talks in Istanbul. During a daily conference call, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described the situation as 'completely scandalous,' emphasizing that the threats target Medinski's family rather than him directly. He underscored the need for clarity on the source of these threats, stating that if they originate from Ukraine, the situation would be deemed 'completely outrageous.'

In response to the threats received by Medinski's family, the Russian Investigative Committee has initiated a criminal case. Russian media also reported that Medinski has been placed on a Ukrainian blacklist known as Mirotvorets, which includes personal information about his close relatives such as his wife, children, father, and sister.

Amid ongoing speculations regarding the negotiations, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov dismissed claims suggesting that the U.S. had advised Moscow to replace Medinski in the talks. He asserted that if Washington wished to communicate something, they could do so directly rather than resorting to 'humiliating rumors.' Lavrov insisted that Russian delegates are appointed by President Vladimir Putin, maintaining that the negotiation process is not influenced by foreign leaders.

As the Kremlin awaits a response from Ukraine regarding their proposal for a second meeting on June 2 in Istanbul, Peskov reiterated the importance of confirming both sides' willingness to continue discussions. He rejected Ukrainian demands for a quick submission of a resolution memorandum, arguing that such demands are not constructive and do little to facilitate meaningful dialogue.

Conversely, Ukraine perceives Russia's approach, particularly the handling of the memorandum content, as a delaying tactic. Lavrov urged all nations genuinely interested in a peace process to support the continuation of direct negotiations, as tensions remain high between the two countries.

On May 19, President Putin proposed collaborative efforts for a roadmap to resolve the conflict during a call with U.S. counterpart Donald Trump, reflecting the complex geopolitical landscape surrounding the ongoing discussions. Medinski has expressed his readiness to engage with Ukraine over the conflict resolution memorandum and ceasefire conditions, highlighting a shared interest in finding a path forward and ending hostilities. As both parties gear up for the second round of talks, the prospect of reaching a peace agreement remains uncertain amidst these escalating tensions.
