Kremlin Proposes Ceasefire Demands as Russia and Ukraine Engage in Ongoing Negotiations
The Kremlin announced on Saturday its intention to present Ukraine with a list of demands aimed at achieving a ceasefire, according to spokesman Dmitry Peskov. In a statement to a TASS journalist, Peskov indicated that both sides have agreed to exchange lists of conditions necessary for halting hostilities. "The Russian side will prepare and deliver this list, which will then be exchanged with the Ukrainian side," he explained.
Peskov advised against disclosing the specific details of the demands, highlighting that negotiations are still in progress and should remain confidential. Further information regarding the contents of Russia's list was not provided.
This announcement follows a day of direct talks held in Istanbul between delegations from Russia and Ukraine, where officials reached agreements on several key points. Among these was the decision to exchange 2000 prisoners, with 1000 from each side, and to discuss ceasefire proposals from both nations.
Additionally, after nearly two hours of discussions, both parties agreed to reconvene for further negotiations, although specifics regarding the timing, location, and attendees remain undisclosed.
Hints of a potential peace summit were also implied during Peskov's statements, suggesting that such a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky could occur, contingent on the establishment of preliminary agreements, such as a ceasefire. Peskov expressed optimism, stating, "We believe that this meeting can happen thanks to the joint efforts of both delegations after reaching certain agreements," reiterating the necessity for confidentiality in the negotiations.
As tensions between the two nations persist, the world watches closely as both countries work towards a resolution to the ongoing conflict.
