Leadership Change in Madrid Municipal Police Amid Controversy

The Government team in Madrid has officially dismissed Pablo Enrique Rodríguez from his position as the Municipal Police Director, as announced by Security and Emergencies delegate Inma Sanz during a press conference. This decision comes at a pivotal moment, marking the end of a significant chapter in the city's law enforcement leadership. Rodríguez's departure is influenced by a series of challenges faced during his tenure, notably arising from a tragic incident in April 2025 when he accidentally ran over a girl while driving a police vehicle coinciding with a major blackout. This incident has prompted persistent calls for his resignation from the left-wing factions in the city. Inma Sanz explained that the decision to replace Rodríguez was rooted in the need for a transition in leadership within the Municipal Police, which is seen as transitioning into a new stage after having recently undergone considerable transformation. Over the past seven years, the municipal police force has seen its officer count rise from 5,600 to 6,300, with plans to further bolster numbers and resources in the near future. Antonio Domingo Ayuso has been appointed as the new Director General of the Municipal Police. He has been serving as deputy director within the Security and Emergencies team, and his promotion is part of a broader strategy to modernize and enhance the effectiveness of the municipal police force. Sanz indicated that with the challenges of the past behind them, they are looking towards a more sustainable and robust future for the police department. During her remarks, Inma Sanz also took the opportunity to thank Rodríguez for his nearly seven years of service, reflecting on the complexities and responsibilities he navigated during his time in office. As the new leadership takes the helm, many anticipate that the changes will not only improve the efficiency of the police but also restore public trust in the force.
