Luis de la Fuente's Journey: From Early Struggles to World Cup Glory
Luis de la Fuente's international coaching career took its first steps in the challenging environment of a semifinal against France, almost reaching the pinnacle of success only to be thwarted. Remarkably, Aymeric Laporte was a participant in both of these near-misses, with 13 years separating them. After a decisive victory at Dallas Stadium that propelled Spain into the World Cup final, De la Fuente reflected on the lengthy road to this achievement, reminding his players of their humble beginnings. "We embraced and said, 'Who would have thought back in 2015 that 11 years later we would be in the World Cup final after the journey we've had?'"
De la Fuente gained prominence by winning the U19 European Championship in 2015 with a promising team that included players like Unai Simón, Rodri, and Mikel Merino. His early interactions with the national team, however, were marred by frustration. The turning point came when he stumbled upon an advertisement for a coaching position with the Royal Spanish Football Federation while he faced prolonged unemployment and financial insecurity. In May 2013, he signed a short contract to lead the U19 squad to the European Championship in Lithuania, facing a notably challenging task. His team reached the semifinals only to be tragically eliminated by France in extra time.
Fast forward to the present day, not a single player from that original squad remains on the national team. Notable, however, are two members from the French team, Adrien Rabiot and Laporte, the latter having switched allegiance to Spain in 2021 and now serving as a critical asset under De la Fuente's leadership.
Despite his eventual successes, De la Fuente's early years were marked by setbacks, including his failure to qualify for the U19 European Championship in 2014 when Germany's formidable team featuring talents like Joshua Kimmich and Leroy Sané halted his ambitions. In his autobiographical writings, he expressed the pain of those moments, recognizing the fierce competition in international football.
After securing Spain's second-ever World Cup semifinal appearance, De la Fuente shared lessons learned over years of dedication. Central to his approach is the criticality of choosing the right companions on this journey; missteps here can lead to significant challenges. "We have emphasized the importance of that; it makes the journey much better. We have the best companions," he affirmed.
Throughout his management of the senior team, De la Fuente has repeatedly underscored the necessity of surrounding oneself with the right people. His success trajectory continued with a U21 European Championship win in 2019, where several familiar faces, like Unai Simón and Mikel Merino, were pivotal. Additionally, in 2021, he guided a young squad to Olympic silver in Tokyo, further strengthening his command over the team.
Following their impressive victory over France in Dallas, a notable moment arose when De la Fuente shared his motivational message with the players before the match. He framed the contest as a showdown between one of the world’s best national squads and what he dubbed as “the best team in the world.” This team-centric philosophy underscores the essence of their success—strength in unity.
Moreover, long-serving employees of the RFEF have expressed admiration not just for their winning record, but for the emotional connection and camaraderie fostered within the squad. A poignant story emerged recently when Ángel Martínez, a photographer for the federation, learned of his mother’s passing just minutes before the quarterfinal began. Despite his grief, he carried on working. Once the match concluded, assistant Aitor Karanka, upon learning the news, informed De la Fuente, who subsequently brought Martínez into the locker room. There, players rallied around him in a touching moment of collective support, illustrating both their sensitivity and spirit as a team.
As Luis de la Fuente prepares to lead Spain into the World Cup final, his journey is not merely a path of wins and losses but a profound testament to resilience, teamwork, and emotional strength—a narrative that inspires not just sports fans but all who regard the beautiful game.
