Madrid Court Excludes Air Europa Bailout from Begoña Gómez Case Investigations

The Provincial Court of Madrid has made a significant ruling regarding the ongoing Begoña Gómez case, deciding to exclude the investigation of the Air Europa bailout from its scope. This decision follows a series of charges previously determined by Judge Juan Carlos Peinado, particularly those against Joaquín Goyache, the rector of Complutense University, and Juan José Güemes, a former councilman of Madrid and current executive at the Instituto de Empresa.

The ruling, as reported by Europa Press, comes from Section Number 23 of the Court, which nullified a request from the investigating judge who sought to gather information from the Sociedad Estatal de Participaciones Industriales (SEPI) about the aid provided to Air Europa. The judges concluded that the bailout should remain outside the defined scope of the ongoing inquiry, indicating a specific limitation on what can and cannot be investigated within the case.

Furthermore, the decision maintains that businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés is regarded as a suspect in the investigation. However, it underscores a critical procedural point: any incriminating statements made by Barrabés that are not ratified through information about his rights and the presence of his lawyer will lack evidential value. This assertion marks an important reminder of the legal protections afforded to suspects during investigative procedures.

The ruling reflects the complexities of legal investigations involving high-profile figures and entities, particularly as they intertwine with public interests and corporate bailouts. As the Begoña Gómez case continues to unfold, this latest development may influence the trajectory of the investigation and the legal implications for those involved.
