Madrid's Cercanías Network Faces Disruption Due to Catenary Malfunction
The Cercanías train network in Madrid experienced significant disruptions on Wednesday morning due to a malfunction that caused the interruption of services. The issue resulted from a lack of tension in the catenary, as explained by Adif, the administrator of rail infrastructure in Spain, via their social media channels.
Train services were particularly affected between the Atocha and Nuevos Ministerios stations, as well as between Atocha and Embajadores. Additional lines serving routes from Móstoles-El Soto and Fuenlabrada-Humanes were also impacted, ultimately extending to Embajadores and Atocha. Trains on the affected routes concluded their journeys at either Atocha or Chamartín stations.
In total, seven Cercanías lines—C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C7, C8, and C10—faced disruptions due to this incident. Adif promptly mobilized its staff to address the issue and restore normal operations as swiftly as possible.
The incident, which began at approximately 5:43 AM, caused diversions and interruptions throughout the network. By around 7:30 AM, Adif announced that train service had resumed through the Sol tunnel. However, operations remained suspended through the Recoletos tunnel, leading to further inconvenience for passengers.
Trains continued to terminate services at either Atocha or Chamartín, depending on their originating stations. Commuters are advised to stay updated through official channels as repairs and normal operations progress.
