Major European Crackdown on Illegal Streaming: Operation Takendown Targets Audiovisual Piracy
Italian police launched a massive operation on Wednesday targeting illegal streaming across Italy and seven other European countries, marking one of the largest coordinated efforts against audiovisual piracy on the continent. Codenamed Operation Takendown, the initiative was organized by the Catania Public Prosecutors Office, aimed at dismantling a sprawling transnational criminal organization that had illegally served more than 22 million users.
In a significant show of force, over 270 postal police officers conducted 89 searches across 15 regions of Italy, working in collaboration with international law enforcement agencies. Searches were also carried out in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Romania, and Croatia, targeting a total of 102 individuals suspected of being linked to this extensive piracy network.
The Croatian police, in their efforts to contribute to this unified crackdown, executed precautionary custody orders against 11 individuals currently under investigation. This unprecedented operation highlights the growing concern over illegal streaming services, which undermine the legitimate audiovisual market and contribute to significant revenue losses for creators and distributors.
With the rise of digital streaming platforms, illegal operations have become increasingly sophisticated, attracting millions of users who seek free access to copyrighted content. However, authorities are now ramping up efforts to combat these practices and protect the rights of content creators.
