Mali's Defense Minister Sadio Camara Dies After Jihadist Attacks

Mali's Defense Minister Sadio Camara has tragically lost his life following a series of coordinated assaults by jihadists and Tuareg rebels targeting military and government facilities. The announcement of Camara's death was made by a military spokesperson during a news broadcast on state television in the evening. The attacks occurred on Saturday, resulting in widespread destruction including the burning of the residence of General Camara, images of which circulated on social media. However, details surrounding his injury and eventual fate remained unclear until the official confirmation of his death was released. Camara was a key figure in the military government, often regarded as the second-in-command within the ruling junta. Government sources reported that a suicide bomber used an explosives-laden vehicle to carry out an attack directly in front of Camara's residence in Kati, a town situated northwest of the capital, Bamako. He ultimately succumbed to his severe injuries at the hospital. In addition to the attack on Camara, the military confirmed that terrorist activities were noted in Bamako and several other locations across the country, including Gao in the east, Mopti along the Niger River, and Kati. These attacks have raised alarm and concern regarding the security situation in Mali, as the interim president and junta leader, Assimi Goita, also resides in Kati. This tragic event marks a significant escalation in the challenges facing Mali’s government and the ongoing struggle against insurgent forces. Related Sources: • Source 1 • Source 2 • Source 3
