Malu Dreyer to Step Down as Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate
Malu Dreyer, the Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate from the Social Democratic Party (SPD), is set to resign from her position, as confirmed by government sources. The news of her impending resignation was initially reported by the German Press Agency and later confirmed by several media outlets. It is anticipated that Alexander Schweitzer, also from the SPD and currently serving as the Minister for Labor, Social Affairs, Transformation, and Digitalization in Mainz, will succeed Dreyer. The State Chancellery in Mainz has refrained from commenting on the reports to Reuters but has scheduled a press conference. Dreyer, aged 63, has held the position of Minister President since 2013, first in a red-green coalition and later in a traffic light coalition since 2016. She was also a deputy national chairperson of the SPD from 2017 to 2019 and has been a member of the party since 1995. The state parliamentarian Roger Lewentz is the chairman of the regional association. The most recent state election in Rhineland-Palatinate took place in March 2021, with the next one scheduled for the spring of 2026. This development adds to the ongoing discussions about asylum policy in Germany, with more Ministers Presidents feeling the pressure in this regard.
