Massive Pro-Palestine Demonstrations Erupt Across Spain
A wave of solidarity for Palestine swept through several Spanish cities today, marking a significant demonstration against the actions of Israel in Gaza. From Madrid to Barcelona, citizens united in a collective call to end what they describe as genocide, demanding urgent attention to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
In Madrid, thousands gathered at Atocha, marching towards Callao at 6 PM to voice their dissent against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government. Protesters chanted slogans such as "Where are the sanctions on Israel?" and expressed their frustration with local leaders, including Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the President of the Community of Madrid, and Mayor José Luis Martínez Almeida. Many attendees donned black clothing to symbolize mourning, as Palestinian flags and banners adorned the crowds, coinciding with the upcoming second anniversary of the Gaza conflict.
Barcelona witnessed one of the largest gatherings, with approximately 70,000 people, according to urban authorities, although organizers claimed the number was as high as 300,000. This demonstration, organized by over 600 entities, was deemed a pivotal moment in favor of Palestine, concluding at the Arc de Triomphe before merging with an afternoon encampment at Drassanes. Natàlia Abu-Sharar, the spokesperson for the Palestinian Community of Catalonia, criticized discussions of a U.S. peace plan for Gaza, arguing it served as a facade to justify continued violence against the Palestinian people. Alys Samson, representing the Coalition Enough Complicity with Israel, declared that this day would highlight Catalonia’s unified stance against Israeli actions and called for the cessation of arms trade and diplomatic relations with Israel by the Spanish government.
Further demonstrations also took place in Seville and Malaga, where protesters called for the release of humanitarian aid activists detained by Israeli forces. In Seville, over a thousand participants displayed Palestinian flags, with notable figures such as United Left’s federal coordinator, Antonio Maíllo, participating and expressing doubts about the prospects of peace negotiations led by Israel. Maíllo emphasized the pride of Spanish society in standing in solidarity with Palestine and condemned the actions taken against civilians, which have reportedly resulted in over 60,000 deaths, including 20,000 children.
In Malaga, participants reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause. Toni Valero, the regional coordinator of United Left, highlighted these demonstrations' importance in showcasing the dignity of the Spanish people and the need to confront government inaction regarding the conflict. Valero criticized the European Union for failing to meet the moral expectations of its citizens, urging an immediate halt to trade relations with Israel.
As these protests unfold, they reflect a growing discontent in Spain regarding international responses to the situation in Gaza, signaling a call for systematic change and solidarity with the Palestinian struggle.
