Massive Protest in Extremadura to Oppose Closure of Almaraz Nuclear Plant

Thousands of protesters, including numerous political representatives from varying backgrounds, are currently marching from the Almaraz Town Hall square towards the gates of the Almaraz nuclear power plant. They are carrying banners and chanting slogans to demand the continuation of operations at the facility, which the central government plans to close. The demonstration, organized by the town halls from the areas influenced by the Almaraz nuclear plant and supported by the citizens' platform 'Yes to Almaraz, Yes to the Future,' began at 10:30 AM from the town hall to showcase the widespread opposition among the people of Extremadura regarding the planned closure of the nuclear facility. The first unit is set to cease operations in 2027, with a complete shutdown planned for 2028.

Leading the procession is María Guardiola, the President of the Regional Government of Extremadura, flanked by Enrique Hueso Retamosa, the Mayor of Navalmoral de la Mata, and well-known scientific communicator Alfredo García, who serves as a reactor operator and supervisor. The preliminary gathering also featured the presidents of the provincial councils of Cáceres and Badajoz, Miguel Ángel Morales and Miguel Ángel Gallardo, who stand firmly against the proposed closure.

The turnout has clearly demonstrated a strong representation of Extremadura society, drawing in mayors, citizens, and members from various economic, political, and social sectors who are united in their fight to keep the Almaraz nuclear plant operational. This protest not only highlights the importance of the plant to the local economy but also reflects the broader anxiety surrounding governmental decisions that impact employment and energy security in the region.
