Meloni Meets Mattarella Amid Controversy Over Alleged Advisor Comments
On Wednesday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited the Quirinal Palace in Rome for a crucial meeting with President Sergio Mattarella. The meeting was initiated by Meloni, who reached out to the head of State earlier that morning, as reported by various sources.
This encounter comes in the wake of concerns raised by Meloni's party, Brothers of Italy (FdI), regarding a report published in the daily newspaper La Verità . The paper suggested that an advisor to the President was allegedly advocating for initiatives against Meloni's government and the ruling center-right coalition.
The report stemmed from a private conversation involving presidential advisor Francesco Saverio Garofani, who is known to have previously served as a lawmaker for the opposition center-left Democratic Party (PD). This information was said to have been overheard in a restaurant.
In response to the allegations, the President's office expressed their astonishment, particularly at the comments made by FdI's Lower House whip, Galeazzo Bignami. They noted that Bignami's remarks contributed to what they deemed was yet another ridiculous attack on the Presidency of the Republic.
The tension surrounding the situation highlights the ongoing political dynamics in Italy, as the ruling coalition faces challenges from both within and outside its ranks.
