Meta Lifts Restrictions on Donald Trump's Accounts, Allowing Equal Communication for Nominated Presidential Candidates
The Facebook and Instagram parent company, Meta, announced on Friday local time that it is lifting some restrictions on the accounts of former US President Donald Trump. This decision comes as Trump is running against Democratic President Joe Biden in the upcoming US presidential election in November. Initially, Meta had suspended Trump's accounts indefinitely following his praise of supporters who stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. However, in early 2023, the company decided to restore his accounts but stated that it would closely monitor Trump's posts for any potential rule violations. Meta indicated that violations could lead to suspensions ranging from one month to two years. It's worth noting that Twitter, now known as X, had also suspended Trump's account in 2021, but billionaire Elon Musk reinstated it shortly after taking over the company in 2022. Despite this, Trump has been relatively quiet on the platform, having only posted once since his account was reinstated.
