Minister Félix Bolaños Clarifies Resignation of Secretary Santos Cerdán Amid UCO Report

In a recent statement, Félix Bolaños, the Minister of the Presidency, Justice, and Relations with the Courts, addressed the resignation of Santos Cerdán, the Secretary of Organization, following a controversial report from the UCO (Central Operational Unit) regarding alleged irregularities in public works contracts. Bolaños clarified that the report does not point to any evidence of improper financing within the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party).

He explained that the mention of a 'tax' by former ministerial advisor Koldo García pertains to a voluntary fee paid by public officials who are members of the PSOE. This terminology refers to a structured fee that members contribute based on their earnings, which is commonly recognized within the party.

Bolaños spoke to reporters the day after Cerdán's resignation, an action prompted by accusations of kickbacks linked to public works contracts. He reiterated that the PSOE's financial accounts have been thoroughly audited and approved by the Court of Auditors, revealing no discrepancies.

President Pedro Sánchez's prior remarks regarding the impending request for an external audit were echoed by Bolaños, who expressed confidence that such an assessment would confirm the integrity of the party's finances. He emphasized that there are existing laws in place that meticulously scrutinize the accounts and financial practices of all political parties, ensuring transparency and accountability.

When pressed for more details about the UCO report, which includes a warning from the former advisor to ex-Minister José Luis Ábalos directed at a party official about impending tax inquiries, Bolaños reiterated the legitimacy of the party's voluntary fee system. He stated that all socialist militants who hold public office are expected to pay this fee based on their respective salaries, asserting that this is a standard practice within the organization.

Overall, Minister Bolaños's comments aim to dispel concerns regarding the financial conduct of the PSOE and to assure the public and party members alike of the party's commitment to transparency and ethical governance.
