MyungWhun Chung Appointed as La Scala's New Musical Director
South Korean pianist and conductor MyungWhun Chung has been appointed as the new musical director of La Scala in Milan, a prestigious position in the world of classical music. This decision was unanimously approved by the theater's board of directors on Monday, signaling a new chapter for the renowned opera house. Chung will officially commence his role at the start of 2027, following the extension of Italian conductor Riccardo Chailly's term, which has been extended until 2026. Chung's mandate as musical director will continue until 2030.
At 72 years old, MyungWhun Chung brings a wealth of experience to La Scala, having previously conducted nine operas at the venue, resulting in an impressive total of 84 performances and 141 concerts. His deep ties with the theater already include a prominent role as the honorary director of the La Scala Philharmonic, the theater's esteemed orchestra, a position he has held since 2023.
Throughout his distinguished career, Chung has worked with some of the most prominent orchestras globally, including the Opéra de Paris, the Dresden Staatskapelle, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. His contributions to Italian music include significant roles such as the principal guest conductor of the Teatro Comunale in Florence and the principal conductor of the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome.
