National Strike Disrupts Train Services Across Italy: What You Need to Know

Train services in Italy are set to face significant disruptions today and tomorrow due to a national strike in the railway sector. The strike, initiated by the General Base Union (SGB) alongside the national assembly of train drivers and onboard staff, is scheduled to commence at 9 PM on Thursday, September 4, and will continue until 6 PM on Friday, September 5. This walkout is expected to affect both passenger and freight transport nationwide. The strike comes as a response to dissatisfaction with the new collective contract for railway workers that was signed in May 2025. Union representatives have voiced concerns that the salary increases stipulated in the contract are insufficient and that working conditions have not improved, with shifts sometimes extending up to 11 hours. Additionally, safety on trains remains a pressing issue for personnel. Notably, Ferrovie dello Stato, the main operator, has taken steps to enhance safety measures for onboard staff, including the introduction of body cameras in certain regions to combat rising assaults on staff members. Currently, this initiative has been implemented in only five regions; however, an expansion is possible. The strike also addresses specific grievances regarding freight transport operations. The SGB has criticized the practice of employing a single driver per train, known as the 'single agent' system. This protocol has come under fire for potentially compromising safety, given that if a driver becomes ill, the accompanying staff member lacks the necessary qualifications to operate the train. In light of the disruptions caused by the strike, Trenitalia and Italo have announced that a limited number of medium and long-distance trains will operate as scheduled. Passengers can check the list of guaranteed services available for both Trenitalia and Italo. Trenord, which manages rail transport in Lombardy, has also stated that services will be guaranteed from 6 AM to 9 AM and from 6 PM to 9 PM on Friday. Furthermore, substitute bus services will be provided in case the Malpensa Express, which connects Milan Malpensa Airport to Milan Central and Milan Cadorna stations, encounters cancellations. Travelers planning to use rail services during this period are strongly urged to stay updated on the latest information from train operators and to consider alternative arrangements if necessary. The strike highlights ongoing tensions in the railway industry regarding labor conditions, safety measures, and the well-being of those who work tirelessly to keep the rail network operational.
