Nationwide Protests Erupt in Georgia Amid Calls for New Elections
In recent days, Georgia has witnessed escalating protests against the government, leading to numerous injuries and widespread unrest. For the fourth consecutive night, clashes between demonstrators and police have intensified, with the Ministry of the Interior reporting that 21 police officers in the capital, Tbilisi, were injured due to projectiles including stones, pyrotechnics, glass bottles, and metal objects. Over the past few days, a total of 113 police officers have incurred injuries.
While there have been no initial reports detailing the number of injured demonstrators, the Ministry disclosed that 44 individuals were hospitalized following the protests on Saturday, including 27 protesters.
The protests gained momentum after the government announced a halt to European Union accession talks, prompting tens of thousands to take to the streets overnight. In response, police deployed water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowds, while some protesters erected barricades in defiance.
President Salome Surabichvili, a pro-European figure, has urged for new parliamentary elections in light of the widespread discontent. She emphasized the need for a review of the electoral process, which many allege was marred by fraud and a push away from Georgia's pro-European trajectory. "The only way to stability is through new elections. There is no other way," she stated during a meeting with opposition leaders.
The unrest has been brewing for several weeks following the contentious results of the October elections, where the ruling Georgian Dream party secured a parliamentary majority. However, concerns surrounding the government's increasingly authoritarian stance and the conduct of the elections have alarmed both domestic and international observers.
Public sentiment appears to heavily favor a pro-Western and pro-European alignment, igniting fears over a potentially growing influence from Russia if the government's current trajectory continues.
