NBA and FIBA Unite to Launch New Pan-European Men's Basketball League

The NBA and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) announced on Monday, December 22, their plans to prospect teams and owners for the creation of a pan-European men's basketball league. In a joint statement, the two organizations revealed that they would move forward in January by engaging prospective teams and ownership groups as part of their exploration of this ambitious project. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver emphasized the potential of the new league, indicating that discussions with various stakeholders across Europe have confirmed their belief in a significant opportunity to establish a new professional league on the continent. "Together with FIBA, we look forward to engaging prospective clubs and ownership groups that share our vision for the game's potential in Europe," Silver stated. The joint statement provided insights into what the league could look like. It is planned to include not only permanent spots for teams but also a merit-based pathway for every club in a FIBA-affiliated domestic league in Europe to qualify annually. This pathway will be facilitated either through FIBA's Basketball Champions League (BCL) or an end-of-season qualifying tournament. Furthermore, the league's scheduling is set to align with existing domestic league and national team schedules, allowing players the opportunity to represent both their clubs and their national sides. This structure aims to strengthen the overall basketball ecosystem in Europe. In addition to the league's structural components, the NBA and FIBA committed to providing financial support and resources to foster the continued development of basketball in Europe. This financial backing will target not just the new league but also domestic leagues, club team academies, and initiatives aimed at the development of players, coaches, and referees. As the project moves forward, it signals an exciting evolution for basketball in Europe, potentially reshaping the landscape of the sport on the continent. Related Sources: • Source 1 • Source 2
