Nestlé Implements Employment Adjustment Plan Affecting 301 Workers in Spain

Nestlé has announced that it will execute an Employment Adjustment Plan (ERE) that may affect a maximum of 301 employees, equating to 7% of its workforce in Spain. This decision impacts staff in various roles, including office positions, sales teams, distribution centers, and selected production sites located in Pontecesures (Pontevedra), Sebares (Asturias), La Penilla (Cantabria), Miajadas (Cáceres), Reus (Tarragona), and Girona. The multinational company cites the need to realign its structure in Spain to better suit the current market conditions. According to Nestlé, this move aims to ensure the long-term viability of its business and enhance value generation. As of now, the company employs approximately 4,158 workers across Spain. This announcement follows a broader initiative last October, wherein Nestlé began a process to lay off 16,000 workers globally, suggesting a significant shift in the company’s operational strategy. Philipp Navratil, the CEO, noted, 'The world is changing and Nestlé needs to change faster. This will include making difficult but necessary decisions.' The rationale behind these layoffs mirrors the challenges highlighted in Switzerland last year, pointing towards rising operational costs, shifting consumer habits, and the rise of private label brands as key factors influencing these changes. Upon announcing the ERE, Nestlé enters a negotiation phase with labor unions, as is customary during collective dismissals. The dialogues will focus on strategies to mitigate the adverse effects on employment, and the company has expressed its commitment to providing support for those affected. Nestlé emphasized that the decision to proceed with layoffs follows extensive evaluations of operational structures and prior attempts at cost containment measures.
