Netanyahu's UN Address Amidst Global Outcry Over Gaza Violence
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu departed from Ben Gurion Airport on Thursday bound for New York, where he is set to deliver a speech at the 80th General Assembly of the United Nations. His upcoming address arrives against a backdrop of widespread international condemnation of Israel's military operations in the Gaza Strip, with some independent UN agencies characterizing the situation as genocide.
In what could be a significant moment for Palestinian statehood, countries including Canada, the United Kingdom, Portugal, and France are moving towards recognition of Palestine. As he prepared for his flight, accompanied by First Lady Sara Netanyahu, the Prime Minister firmly reiterated his stance against the establishment of a Palestinian state. He stated, "There will never be a Palestinian state," emphasizing his intent to defend Israel's narrative and interests at the international forum.
Netanyahu asserted his objective: to represent the voices of Israeli citizens, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and the State of Israel itself during his address. He expressed his intent to condemn those global leaders who advocate for Palestinian statehood amid what he views as acts of violence by Palestinian groups. "I will condemn those leaders who instead of condemning the murderers, rapists, and child burners, want to give them a state in the heart of Israel," he declared.
Beyond addressing the UN, Netanyahu hinted at plans to meet with President Donald Trump in Washington, reinforcing the idea that his visit to the US will encompass more than merely the UN assembly. He mentioned a strategy focused on achieving several key goals: securing the return of hostages, defeating Hamas, and expanding the so-called ‘Circle of Peace’ following what he refers to as Israel's historic victories, including Operation Rising Lion against Iran.
As Netanyahu prepares to speak, the violence in Gaza persists. Reports indicate that Israel has killed at least 31 Palestinians since early Wednesday, with many victims being civilians seeking refuge. With the situation deteriorating, access to aid is becoming increasingly complicated as Israel blocks key passages, including the main route from Jordan.
The world watches closely as the UN assembly begins, with both the plight of the Palestinian people and Israel's defense narrative at the forefront of global discussions.
